What is copywriting?
As defined in the dictionary, copywriting is ‘the activity or occupation of writing the text of advertisements or publicity material’.
In a little more detail, it is the process of writing marketing and promotional copy that persuades its readers to take some form of action. This might be making a purchase, joining a group or organisation, reading a document, making a donation, organising an appointment or just clicking on a link… the list is almost endless.
Copywriting appears in printed form and online, but it’s also how the scripts for online videos and TV/radio commercials start life. That’s why even if you don’t think you know what copywriting is, it is all around you and part of your everyday life.
It’s on the menu of your favourite restaurant, where delicious descriptions help you to choose the creamy cauliflower velouté or opt for crisp triple-cooked chips. It’s in the theatre programme that tells you which member of the cast won Strictly in 2008. Open an email about this season’s must-have jacket, read a poster for a gig, see breakfast cereal slogans on buses, and even open up a utility bill, and there it is, copywriting in all its glory.
